A morning in the studio, hour by hour

Coffee, a cold room, the best light of the day — and the reason I never paint after two in the afternoon.

The quiet studio at morning with tall windows, an easel and a canvas waiting

07:30 — Unlocking the bakery

The studio used to be a bakery, and on winter mornings it is still cold enough to see your breath. I open the shutters on the river side first, then the big north windows. The light comes in grey and slowly warms.

09:00 — Looking, not painting

I spend the first hour sitting in front of yesterday’s work with coffee, writing down what is wrong with it. The list is usually short and brutal. It decides the day.

By two o’clock the sun swings round to the south and every colour lies to me. That is when I stop.

Afternoons belong to drawing, admin, stretching canvases and, on Thursdays, studio visits. If you would like to come by, the contact page is the best way to arrange it.
