Hanging ‘Low Water’ at Galeria Ribeira

Fourteen works, two days, one spirit level and a long conversation about where the eye should rest.

A room is a composition too

Before a single painting goes up, Ilona and I walk the empty gallery with paper templates cut to the size of every work. We tape them to the walls, step back, move them, step back again. It looks absurd. It saves hours.

For Low Water we hung everything with the centre line at 145 cm — slightly lower than the museum standard — so the horizon in each painting meets the visitor’s eye a moment before they expect it to.

The best hang is the one nobody notices. People should feel the rhythm, not see the measuring tape.

Lighting for texture

The cold-wax surfaces need raking light to show their ridges, so each spotlight is angled at about thirty degrees and diffused with a single sheet of frost filter. Low Water is open until 30 November, Tuesday to Saturday.
